Letter from our President

NELDHA's mission is to further the education of landscape designers, historians, preservationists and conservationists, to promote their professions and to communicate to the public NELDHA's commitment to landscape design, history, preservation, conservation and stewardship of the land.

NELDHA originated in 1968 as a student chapter of the Boston Society of Landscape Architects at Radcliffe College/Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and later as the Radcliffe Landscape Design and History Alumni Association. In 2003, the group incorporated as the New England Landscape Design and History Association (NELDHA), an IRC 501(c)(3) organization.

With the demise of the Landscape Institute and the changes in landscape design practice in recent years, NELDHA faced challenges in recruiting members to our Board and volunteers, as well as in program attendance. Today, there are many landscape organizations doing a very good job in providing educational opportunities for landscape professionals, many NELDHA used to provide. At this time, NELDHA's strengths are in providing specialized programs not offered by other organizations such as our recent preservation workshops.

In recognition of these factors, NELDHA is changing its organization and program focus. NELDHA will no longer be a membership organization. We will continue to collaborate with affiliate organizations offering specialized programs not found elsewhere. We will also open to the public our website archive of Perspectives.

We will finance our operations through event revenue, sponsorships and donations. We will continue the "Find a Landscape Professional" on our website for $75 per year, a reduction from the previous cost of $110 per year. You can find more information on supporting NELDHA and web listings at

I am pleased that NELDHA's Board of Director's and Advisors wish to continue in office and I look forward to working with them in the future.

I also look forward to seeing you at our future cosponsored events and strongly encourage you to get involved in our programs and as members of our Board.

Heidi Kost-Gross, President
